Thursday Thirteen #6

Thirteen Things on my schedule the rest of this week

1. The school spring concert tomorrow. I missed the Christmas (or winter) concert so this is a must-see.
2. Babysitting. I'm trying out watching a three-year-old boy for money. I don't know if I can handle an every-day thing, but maybe two or three times a week will be fine. Today was the first day and he played well with Bud and Cutie.
3. Second grade carnival. I need to pack up some lightly-used toys and books the kids can buy with their "scholar dollars".
4. Park clean-up fundraiser for school. If we get 100 volunteer hours, a corporation will give the school $1000.
5. End-of-year school picnic to mess up the park right after the clean-up.
6. Ant's baptism and confirmation. He is so ready.
7. Feed and entertain extended family coming to town for Ant's baptism. Any ideas?
8. Finish reading Mary, Martha, and Me: Seeking the One Thing that is Needful by Camille Fronk Olsen.
9. Read Housekeeping with Kids by Tara Aronson. I picked this up at Costco last year and I think I really need it now.
10. Clean out the refrigerator. We are running out of space.
11. Go to bed. I'm falling asleep as I type this and I don't.
12. think.I.
13. can.finish.it.....(hope you didn't fall asleep reading it!)

Hold the Rain til After the Party

Yesterday was Ant's 8th birthday party with 13 boys from his school class. The plan was to go to the park for the party to they could play and have fun for less expense (financially and mentally) to me. Wouldn't you know it, they day began as overcast, but the clouds weren't dropping anything so I still had some hope. Until my sister called asking about the alternate plans since the weather man was predicting thunder showers at party time. What alternate plans? STRESS!

I didn't know what to do, so I said a prayer explaining our finances, laying out the birthday plans, and asking Him to hold the rain or inspire us in making alternate plans. What came to my mind was Psalms 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God". I brushed it away because I thought it was just my wishful thinking, besides, didn't I just read that off someone else's blog recently? The party was 6 hours away, and I had a lot to do.

I checked out a party venue with a huge play gym and a huge fee and left. Then I thought, well if it does rain, we could pack all 13 kids in our two cars and go to the nearest pizza place. How not fun. Then I started checking the sky every ten minutes. I saw some breaks, but would they last?

Do you think God cares about a little 8-year-old's birthday party in the park? Well all I know is that the clouds were leaving as we were driving to the park and the sun was shining brightly all throughout the party. Was the weatherman mistaken or did God answer my prayer with a big OK? What do you think?

Safety Mama

I was just over at Karen's and Emily's sites and was reminded of a story I received via junk mail this week called Shannon's Story. It's about how easy it is to find a person through the things they've exposed on the internet. Have you seen it? Have you lived it? I have. Although my experience turned out to be a positive one, I realize that security needs to be kicked up a notch.

His Lateness

When the school carpool van came today, Ant was not ready. I told the carpool to go ahead and leave and then later dh took him to school on his way to work. If dh had already left the house, Ant would have spent the day in his room until the time school got out. I think I got that idea from a Love & Logic book about teaching responsibility.

It is rare for Ant to miss the carpool, however, I wonder if I am expecting too much from my 8-year-old. He is responsible to get himself up, choose his own clothes, get himself dressed, feed himself breakfast (which I think he skips), make his own lunch, pack his homework, bring me his reading slip to sign, comb his hair, and get out the door on time. I figure my job is to give him a clock, purchase clothing and wash whatever he puts in the laundry room, shop and provide the food he can eat and pack, be available to sign the homework, and kiss him goodbye. If his clothes are dirty or tacky, I guess he'll stink or be ridiculed. If he doesn't eat breakfast, I guess he'll be hungry until lunch. If his lunch isn't adequate, I guess he will be hungry until he gets a snack at home. If his homework isn't finished or signed, I guess he'll have to stay in at recess.

Is it too much? What do you do?

In Real Life

It just didn't seem like my real life.

Me: I'm supposed to meet a group of ladies here.
Hostess: Are you with the bloggers (with a little I'm-cooler-than-you sneer)?
Me: Yup (With a great big if-you-only-knew smile)!

As she took me to the back of the restaurant, I was just praying that I didn't trip in all my nervous shakiness. Then I saw them, and my nervousness turned to incredible excitement. I wanted to squeal and run and hug them all, but I just introduced myself as Brooke from ABC Momma and sat down next to Emlouisa and Constant Gardener. I took a good look around. Mary, mom to many, was right across from me with Taffi next to her and then the One Woman Heather. There was DYM, my idol, sitting between a non-blogging (yet) friend and Karen Trade Off who sat across from her sister, Queen Beth. There was Mom on a Wire and our Stitchery Friend, and Princess Mom with her IRL friend.

After that? Let's just say--what happens in Boise, stays in Boise--or--I'm sure you'll hear about it from 13 other people. All I'm going to say is that I love these women even more now, and I hope to meet up with them again.

So, how did I do on my to do list?. Haircut--check; capris--check; tanning--check, but just once; lose poundage--not even close; van--cleaned inside only; affirmations--whatever; shower--check; deodorant--check, check; eat before--forgot; vaseline on teeth--didn't need it to keep smiling; grocery shopping early--had to go after the fiesta; relax--are you kidding?; be myself--I really tried.

Ten "D" Words

Have you heard of the letter game? You write on your blog ten words that start with an assigned letter and explain why you chose those particular words. Stephanie at For Better or Worse assigned to me the letter D. If you want to play along too, leave a comment and I'll assign a letter to you.

I love the Dee, Dee, Dee song that Ernie sings on his record I had when I was a kid. I'll be going through some of the words from the song and explain how they pertain to me.

1. Doggy - There haven't been very many dogs in my life. My parents gave my brother a cocker spaniel/beagle mix that he named Dove. She was light tan and fluffy and stayed outside since she peed everytime she got excited. My parents would give her the whole carcass of a turkey after holiday dinners. Dove became obese in her later years and we could tell she wasn't enjoying life very much. My sister-in-law took pity on Dove and took her to be put to sleep.

2. Dangerous Dragon - My kids and I have enjoyed sitting in shady grass together during this week of high temps. Bud, Cutie, and I made up a story about Sir Bud, Princess Cutie and the White Dragon who were searching for the Dark Knight. In the end, the White Dragon sat on the Dark Knight until he promised to be good and also dig a pool at the castle for Sir Bud and Princess Cutie. It turns out that the dragon liked to swim so much that instead of blowing fire breath, he blew bubbles from then on.

3. Dinosaur - Cutie is watching one of the "Land Before Time" videos right now.

4. Dinner - I haven't planned it yet. We ordered pizza last night and I'm going out with the internet friends tomorrow night, so I guess I should make something. Any ideas?

5. Delicious - that word is tricky. I think if something is delicious, it can't be good for you.

6. Don't drop dishes down on the floor - Does a plastic cup count as a dish? Probably not, but I dropped a cup of chocolate milk on the floor yesterday. The cup landed upright, but the chocolate milk exploded all over the kitchen. My kids were watching me, so instead of crying about it, I said "Oh, well, I guess I'll clean it up!"

7. Do a dance - I took ballet, tap, and jazz from 6-years-old until I quit the drill team my sophomore year in high school. I still can't do the splits.

8. Dig some dirt - we worked in the garden last night. Ant used the shovel to dig up the big weeds, while I weeded the strawberry patch. He then planted some corn, carrots, and tomatoes. I'm not sure what went where, so I hope we can identify them when they come up.

9. That's enough of Ernie, because I need to show you this: my Darling Daughter who decided she needed some more attention so she got a stool to get the nail polish out of my bathroom drawer and the she made her toes pretty. Aren't they? How do you get polish out of the carpet?

10. Darn it - I didn't realize I say this until Bud and Cutie started using it regularly. It (or something similar) was probably used when I discovered #9.

Thursday Thirteen #5 - To Do List

Things to do before I meet internet friends Saturday night:
1. Get a haircut,
2. Buy some cute denim capris.
3. Use my Mother's Day gift and go tanning so my legs aren't so pastey.
4. Lose 5 pounds.
5. Wash and clean out the van.
6. Do my daily affirmation exercises--I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone-it, people like me!
7. Take a shower.
8. Use deodorant.
9. Eat a little bit just before going so I don't look like a pig at the restaurant, which happens to be one of my favorites.
10. Put Vaseline on my teeth to help me smile easily. (I don't know if this really works, but I had to do it for high school drill team performances.)
11. Go grocery shopping earlier--hopefully I won't be able to do it at my usual time, 9:30 Saturday night, because we will be having so much fun.
12. Relax with some deep cleansing breaths.
13. Be myself.

Works for Me - Swiffer

To understand this post, you need to know that as a child & teenager I heard a certain phrase many Saturday mornings as we cleaned the whole house top to bottom. I would hear "If you're not going to do it right, you may as well not do it at all", and then I had to re-clean whatever wasn't done "right". Believing this has impeded my progress in several ways, but my psychology will have to wait for another post. When, or if, I clean, I am pretty anal about it. When, or if, I clean, it is done thoroughly and usually takes a while. However, after therapy and re-training my thoughts, I have found something that does a "good enough" job for me when, or if, I clean the tile floors. Sorry, it must be a bad day.

Do you have one of these? This is the cheap Swiffer. They sell refill cloths for them that are dry or wet. I don't think the dry ones hold onto crumbs on tile well, and when I use the wet ones, the solution makes my tile look dull and I think it just attracts dirt. Save your money--don't buy them.

When I clean my kitchen and entry tile floors, I prefer to vacuum up the crumbs and dirt. When I don't feel like mopping by hand, I get my cheap swiffer. I wet and ring out a sturdy, fluffy kitchen wash cloth, hook it onto the swiffer, and then mop the floor with it. I have my favorite cleaner in a spray bottle that I spray on some sticky areas, but clean water usually does the job. I take off and rinse out the cloth whenever it needs it, and when I'm finished, it goes in the washer. It is vital that the cloth is fluffy both for scrubbing and soaking power.

By the way, I wouldn't do this in the bathrooms unless you wear rubber gloves, spray disinfectant, and use bleach in the washer.

My Life Monday - Love Story

I was 24, had graduated from a junior college, served as a missionary in New York City, and was currently working at a doctor's office while taking a few more classes at the local university when I met Terry who was 27, had graduated from a university in California, returned home to work at a technical place, was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and had just received his temple endowment. We were both taking an LDS Institute night class about the New Testament. I was the vice president of the class, meaning that I was supposed to begin the class with announcements, assign someone to give the opening and closing prayers and devotional, then turn the time over to our instructor. At our first class, I was impressed at the introduction of the group of professional, single roommates who came to class together. I was actually interested in one of Terry's roommates. My friend, Gloria, was interested in Terry.

One night in September, I called their house regarding one of my vice-presidential duties. Terry happened to answer the phone and we had a nice conversation after I took care of my business. It turns out that we graduated from the same big high school, only three years apart. For the rest of September and throughout October my group friends kept running into his group of friends at the many, many LDS young-singles events--Friday night dances, Sunday night devotionals, Saturday night whatevers, and, of course, our weekly New Testament class. During this time, I discovered that I didn't like the roommate so well, but I had become good friends with Terry as I tried to play matchmaker for him and Gloria.

In November, things started tweaking. He came to my ward one Sunday and invited me to go with him to a dinner his ward was having the next night. I asked if I could bring Gloria too. He said "Uh, no."....DUH! He was asking me out on a date! Oh. Okay.

I met him at the dinner and had fun being with him. As part of the entertainment, someone played the guitar and sang the song "Today". I LOVE that song. My father used to play his guitar and sing it and songs from Peter, Paul and Mary to us kids. I thought it was a sign. :) After dinner Terry and I talked for a long, long time and got to know eachother better. He gave me a nice kiss on the cheek as we parted. I felt so comfortable being with him. I used to be all nervous and couldn't really be myself whenever I went out with a guy. This was special, I knew.

By the end of December, we were together most days. His birthday was coming up in January and I asked him what he wanted for his birthday. He said he didn't know, and what do I want for my birthday? Well, my birthday is in August, so I told him that if we are still together then, I hoped we would be married, and I would probably like a new vacuum. I was kind of kidding, kind of not. Well, that spun us into a whirlwind of getting engaged in January, and then getting married in the local temple in March.

I know, I know, I understand your gasp. That began the most wonderful, most trying, most elating, most depressing times in my life. But isn't that life? I love Terry, and I honor the covenant we made together, and now we have our three beautiful children to complete our family. We have a goal to support and help each other so we can be a family for eternity.

Hey, Lady!

Hey Lady! You, the lady at the city park with the blue t-shirt and low-rise jeans that show off your trendy tatto just above your butt crack. Yeah, you, the one with your toddler who's wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a diaper on the play gym. I didn't know why you would dress your daughter in such a peculiar way. Not until my Cutie came to me, her bum soaking wet and upset, because she found the same puddle of sprinkler water on the end of that little yellow slide that your daughter must have found before. Tell me, do you know how your daughter got wet? Did you not investigate and see the puddle on the slide? Why did you not care to swish the water off the slide so no one else would get wet, and so your daughter could slide down it again? Why did you not care to tell me about it as you saw my daughter approach the top of the slide (yes, my husband said you were watching). If you didn't want to clean it off yourself, why did you not call the Parks and Rec Department to come and put up their caution tape and flourescent cones while they clean it up?

In case you care, Lady, it didn't ruin our day. The sun was shining and it was warm, and Cutie's pants dried after a while. We got some toilet paper out of the park bathroom and cleaned up the puddle so the slide could be used until the sprinklers spray it again tomorrow morning.

However, Lady, this rant isn't just for you, it's for all the rest of society who encounter or make a mess and don't report it, and/or don't clean it up, leaving it for an innocent child to find. It's for the parent who doesn't go to the principal to discuss the awful teacher her child has this year, thus allowing thirty more kids to experience the teacher's patheticness next year. It's to the person who knows of an abuse that has happened, but hasn't reported it or pressed charges, leaving the offender free to abuse others.

I feel like I'm the only one cleaning up messes around here, and I'm sick of it! (Sound familiar to anyone?) But I will continue to do it to protect the children.

Is anyone with me?

Thursday Thirteen #4 - Friends

I do this at the risk of leaving someone out, and I hate that, but I need to count my blessings. Here's a little bit about my friends (not listed in any order).

1. Susan moved to my neighborhood when we were 13 years old and in junior high. She was a red-headed, hot-tempered, out-going girl. I was a pretty calm, shy girl. We balanced eachother out and had a lot of fun. We drifted apart as we pursued our lives after high school, but we find our families living in the same (but different) neighborhood again, and enjoy our friendship again. She has calmed down some, goes by her middle name now, and is such a great God-loving woman. Although we don't constantly hang out or call eachother like high-school girls do, I still feel that connection to her as a true friend.

2. My husband, Terry, is the friend I like to be with and talk to the most, as he should be. When we first started dating, I felt so comfortable being with him (which was unusual for me to be with a boy). I knew that he was the man for me. We were married seven months after we first met, and have been together now for a little over nine years.

3. There was another boy, Mike, who was my friend for a few years before Terry came along. He was a chivalrous gentleman and treated me (and all other girls) like a queen. His mother trained him well. We tried being a little romantic, but the connection just wasn't there. Some boys are just better friends.

4. My mom is now my friend, at least I'm trying to work on that. She was not a happy lady while I was growing up, but got some help soon after I went to college about 15 years ago. She gives everything for others. She needs to take care of herself.

5. My older sister, Kristen, and I would fight like girls growing up. I think we stunted eachother's growth in the chest area. We would have some good moments--I remember laying on her bed reading scriptures together and then singing along to a Jane Wiedlin tape.

6. My younger sister Kimberly is becoming my friend again. There was a time when I felt distant from her, both geographically and spiritually. She had a baby boy in January and is currently having a very rough trial. She is pulling through it like a hero.

7. I've mentioned Heidi several times before, and I wouldn't dare to leave her out of this list. I love having her live with my family, and I hope she feels comforable here. Ant thinks she doesn't like us because she goes out with her friends almost every night--what 21-year-old doesn't? Heidi and Cutie have formed a special bond.

8. Natalie, April, Gretchen, and the other Brooke--the ladies I work with in Primary at church. Our planning meetings last forever because we get sidetracked in our conversations. April is a great organizer and has helped me develop a system to keep the kitchen bar cleared of clutter. Natalie's son and Bud are great friends and we carpool to preschool together. Gretchen just had her sixth child last week (which reminds me to take dinner tonight). Brooke seems like she has it all together.

9. Eric and Chris, a husband and wife who took on the charter school project together. It's amazing what a family can accomplish as they work together. Chris recently started her second trimester with her 8th pregnancy (they have two living children). They could use some prayers on her behalf.

10. Sandy is actually my mom's friend, but I put her on this list because of the service she has given us. She has been involved as a major support in most of the events of my parent's family.

11. Friends from the book club, who's participants change often, but we've met every month for over 3 (or is it 4?) years. I have come to depend upon that night out once a month.

12. Tiffany, who has become my imaginary friend. My husband has never met her, but we were friends from 1st grade to graduation. She got pregnant and married soon after graduation while I went to the other side of the state to college. I've only seen her a few times since then. We had some kind of falling out, not a confrontational one, letters and phone calls just went unanswered. I think life just took her one way and me another.

13. Then there's you. Yes you--the one reading this. I'm so glad you are here. I love it when you comment and lead me to your blog to share your life with me. We have so much in common.

Hello, Hello

Do you ever just let yourself go? Just let yourself go and be silly and have some fun? I've been thinking of one part of the me-me I did that said I dance to give my kids a good laugh. I haven't done that in a long time, until today.

I turned on the radio while getting myself ready this morning. Bud and Cutie were in my room talking with me, wanting me to put moose in their hair too. That U2 song, Vertigo, comes on and I feel it--the urge to dance. I didn't care how I looked, I just felt energy that I had to express. I had so much fun jumping and dancing and giggling like a teenager in the 80s. Freedom for about three minutes. And it was enough to fill me up for the day.

Tomorrow I'm going to dance for six minutes.

My Life Monday - First Grade

Rachelle started My Life Monday and today's subject is my most memorable childhood experience.

My first grade teacher, Mrs. R., was a frightening woman. She scared me so much that I would have stomach pains and nausea and beg to stay home from school. The pains were so intense one time that I spent the night in the hospital waiting for an appendectomy, which was cancelled in the morning after I happily jumped on the bed during the pre-op exam (at the doc's request, of course). But that's not the most memorable experience.

I hate being cold, and I remember the 1978 winter being especially cold. The school rule was that a student could stay inside during recess only if they were sick (like with a cold) and had a note from a parent. I wanted to stay inside, but I wasn't really sick, and my mom refused to lie to my teacher. I had to take matters into my own hands. I forged a letter to Mrs. R. from my mom. I don't remember what I said, but it probably looked something like this (just picture it written in first-grade handwriting):
dear mrs r__

Plees let Brooke stay in side for reesess. she is sik.

love
mrs _____

I gave that note to Mrs. R. and she came to my desk before morning recess, stood threateningly over me and asked, "Did you write this note!" To which I replied, "No?" as my face became red hot.

She took the note and stepped out into the hallway, probably to laugh with the other teachers. I thought I was in trouble, but she didn't say anything more to me when she came back into the classroom.

When recess came, I stayed inside, all toasty and warm, and read a book for about three minutes, when the teacher on recess duty came in and said I had to go outside--she didn't care that I had a note!

I don't know how many years passed before I understood how she knew the document was forged.

No Review Saturday

We didn't get to go out this weekend. I know, you must have been looking forward to it. Had we gone out, I probably would have chosen Goodwood for their pulled pork sandwich (not Carolina style). We often get a pound of the pulled pork for take out, use the buns from our freezer, make some tater tots, and it feeds my whole family for dinner--with leftovers--for about $12. Add a salad for color and nutrition.

What's your favorite take-out, besides the fast-food joints?

I Am, I Want, I Wish Me-me

Thanks to Beth at Total Mom Haircut for tagging me to do this me-me. It took a lot of thought.

I AM a wife, lover, mother, homemaker, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and so much more.
I WANT a one-level home with a basement. I hardly ever go upstairs in this house, and it shows.
I WISH my husband sucess in his new career.
I HATE it when children whine for food when I'm babysitting--and I know they have been fed.
I MISS -- I don't miss much.
I HEAR Dragontales playing in the next room.
I WONDER where old friends are.
I REGRET some things I've said.
I AM NOT stupid.
I DANCE so my kids can get a good laugh.
I SING alto.
I CRY when I'm happy, sad, angry, etc--whenever emotion just spills over.
I AM NOT ALWAYS using the computer. I get out sometimes.
I MAKE WITH MY HANDS lovely quilts once a decade or so.
I WRITE what I think.
I CONFUSE my wants and needs.
I NEED to go to bed earlier.
I SHOULD clean my house today.
I START too many projects at once.
I FINISH this me-me tagging anyone else who wants to do it.

Works-For-Me Hand Sweeper

OK, so this hasn't actually worked for me yet, but I saw that it worked for someone else and had to share it.

I was sitting behind my friend Teresa and her family a few Sundays ago at church. Her 3-year-old daughter had a poptart (we go at 8:00 a.m.) and was making a nice pile of crumbs on the floor. I couldn't figure out why Teresa would allow her child to desecrate the Lord's house in that way (sarcasm)--she just didn't care--until she whipped out of her diaper bag this thing and gave it to her daughter who cleaned up her own mess in two seconds. I'm weird, I know, but witnessing that scene gave me goosebumps and I told Teresa that I needed to share her tool on the blog. She said it's a hand sweeper that she purchase it at the local Don Aslett Cleaning Center. They are only $5.00 (plus $3-4 shipping) from a few places on the internet--just Google "crumb sweeper" to find one.

Updated: Teresa just told me that they were two for $5 at the Don Aslett store. Let's go!

Busy Monday

I'm on a roll! This was another productive day. I Woke up early, read scriptures, said my prayer, made homemade waffles, volunteered at the school, fixed the toilet, made a grocery list, went to Costco (spent way more than $20 this time--we were out of everything), put groceries away, picked up the carpool, played with the blog template, weeded the burm out front, mowed the lawn, cleaned up dinner (thanks, DH, for making the tacos), and put Cutie to bed. I'm exhausted!

I think I'll spend most of tomorrow morning in my pajamas.
